TEXT 2. London

London is the capital of Great Britain, its political, business and cultural center. It stands on both sides of the river Thames. It is the biggest city in Britain and one of the largest cities in the world. Its population is about 9 million people.

London is an ancient city. It was founded by the Romans more than 2000 years ago. The Romans called it Londinium.

Traditionally it is divided into four parts: the City, Westminster, the West End and the East End.

The heart of London is the City. It is the oldest part of London. Its area is about 1 square mile and only a few thousand people live there. It is the centre of the business and financial life of the country. There are a lot of offices and banks in that part of the city.

You can visit some interesting places of the City or near it. One of them is the Tower of London. William the Conqueror built it in the 11th century. It was a fortress, a palace, a prison, a treasury and the King’s Zoo. Now it is a museum. There are always black ravens in the Tower of London. The Tower ravens are said to hold the power of the Crown itself.

St. Paul’s Cathedral was built after the Great Fire of 1666. The architect was Sir Christopher Wren. It took him thirty-five years to finish St. Paul’s. The Cathedral is the finest Renaissance Church in Europe.

Westminster is an official part of London. Here you will see Westminster Abbey — an ancient church built in the 16th century. All kings and queens of Great Britain (41 in all) were crowned and buried there. William the Conqueror was the first king to be crowned in Westminster Abbey. Many famous writers, poets, public figures are buried there too.

Across the road from Westminster Abbey there are the Houses of Parliament – the seat of the British Parliament. It is the most impressive building with beautiful towers. One of them is the Clock Tower with its famous Big Ben. Many people think that Big Ben is the clock or the tower itself. In fact, it is the largest of the five bells (it weighs 13,5 tons).

The Queen of England and the Royal family live in Buckingham Palace. It is a wonderful building, in front of which is the Queen Victoria Memorial. The palace is a setting for state occasions and royal entertaining, and a major tourist attraction.

The West End is the richest and most beautiful part of London. Here you can see the finest theatres, cinemas and concert halls, large museums, hotels, restaurants, clubs, the most famous shops and beautiful parks. Mayfair, Regent Street, OxfordStreet, Bond Street are famous for their splendid shops. The name «West End» is associated with wealth, luxury and goods of high quality.

Trafalgar Square is a geographical center of London. It was named in the memory of Admiral Nelson’s victory at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The tall Nelson’s Column stands in the middle of the square. At Christmas time people gather round a huge Christmas tree which is sent to Britain from Norway every year. Behind Nelson’s Column is the National Gallery, an art gallery in which you can admire pictures by many old masters.

Not far from the National Gallery is the British Museum, one of the largest museums in the world. It has a great library with 5 or 6 mln. books. It is also a great scientific institution generally known as national History Museum. Besides, the British Museum is a national museum of antiquities and ethnography.

There are ten Royal parks in London and around it. They are called the lungs of the city. The parks are open to the public and free of charge. Hyde Park is one of the famous parks of London. It is a place where Londoners can enjoy their free time reading books, walking, doing what they like.

To the East of the City there is the Port of London. This is the East End of London, an industrial part of the city, unattractive in appearance but very important to the country’s commerce. Workers, dockers and small craftsmen live there. People who live in the East End call themselves «Cockneys». The word «cockney» means a true Londoner.
