Appliances for Fire Brigades
Fire brigades are equipped with some or all of the following appliances:
Self-Propelled Pumps consist of a vehicle carrying a fire pump that is driven
either by a “power take-off” from the engine of the vehicle or by a separate internal
combustion engine. The pump is usually a centrifugal pump, capable of delivering 500-
1000 gallons per minute, but it may be a reciprocating one.
Turntable Ladders are made of steel and consist of a main ladder within which
three or more extension ladders are raised by steel cables.
Water Tenders are vehicles carrying a tank of water, often of 400-500 gallons
capacity. They are valuable in country areas where water supplies are limited.
Other appliances include foam tenders, hoses, pipe-carriers, salvage tenders,
radio vans, control units, communication units and tenders which carry special
devices such as searchlights, smoke exhausters and cutting sets, not provided on
other appliances.

The History of Fire Protection and Prevention
Often in your role as a fire prevention officer you will have to answer many
professional questions. To do it properly you must know the historical background of
your job. Reviewing the past you will be able to trace the history of fire protection and
prevention and soon realize that the laws regulating fire hazards and efforts in fire
prevention are really not new.
The first efforts organized to protect property and prevent fires date back to 300
B.C. in Rome. Historians record that a band of slaves were to watch for fires from atop
the protective hills of the city and warn the citizens of fire. This type of captive fire
watch was continued until the reign of Caesar Augustus (27 B.C.—14 A.D.).
Under Caesar Augustus the first municipal-type fire department emerged. The
command structure was almost identical to that used by fire department today. There
were seven squads (fire-fighting forces) containing 100 to 1000 men per squad. Each
man within each squad had a particular task. For example, he could be an Aquarius
(water carrier) or perhaps a Siponarius (pump supervisor). Each squad had a supervising
officer who could be compared with the present day battalion chief with the title of fire
centurion.
According to Roman law, in case of fire, the cause and the responsibility for it
were to be determined.

Fireman is My Future Specialty
A fire service is not a career but a profession and a good fireman makes his work
also his hobby. It is surprising how little the community sometimes knows about the fire
service and the work of a fireman. Everybody should understand that the field of
knowledge required for this profession is very great and includes mathematics,
hydraulics, chemistry, electricity, communications, English, building construction, fire
service law, fire alarms, fire fighting equipment, extinguishing agents and so on. Now,
entering a building, a fireman can’t use water indiscriminately. Modern industry has
recently developed many hazardous materials which produce a great explosion on
contact with water.
A fireman must acquire certain skills and practical qualifications including pump
operation, driving, special appliance operation, breathing apparatus and first aid
appliances. He spends much time on training – participates in practical drill involving
ladders and hose, practises skills with different fire fighting equipment.
Discipline standards are also very high. A fireman must be able to respond to an
alarm from any duty during the day time and from a rest period at night time as soon as
possible and not more than in a minute. It means that in this time he has to be on the
appliance and leave the fire station. He is to respond to instructions in emergency
situations with readiness and without question.
Moreover, a fire fighter must have such very important personal characteristics as
honesty, reliability and courage.

Fire Fighting
Fire fighting is activity directed at limiting the spread of fire and extinguishing it
and, when it is possible, fire fighters rescue persons endangered by the fire. Fire fighters
skilled in the use of specific equipment go as rapidly as possible to the site of fire.
Usually a fire service dispatches a pumping truck, a ladder truck and a rescue vehicle to
the scene. If a fire involves a structure occupied by many persons, two or more
companies may respond to the first alarm. To extinguish a fire, fire fighters first are to
determine the techniques to be used in putting it out, taking into account the
construction of the burning building and fire protection systems within it.
Systematic fire fighting involves four steps: protection of currently uninvolved
buildings and areas, confinement of the fire, ventilation of the building and
extinguishment of the fire. When the last stage is accomplished fire fighters initiate
salvage of the structure by removing smoke and water from the interior and protecting
undamaged materials.

William I (William the Conqueror) of England (1027—1089) decreed one of the
first recorded fire prevention regulations. The use of an open hearth for heating and
cooking within houses created a fire danger. That is why William I ordered to
extinguish all fires at night. On the ringing of the evening bell the hearth was also to be
covered. And as the hearth cover was called the couvre-feu, the bell became known as
the couvre-feu bell. With the passage of time both the original meaning and the word
have changed. This specific bell is now called the curfew. This original fire prevention
signal now has a different meaning but a similar use. At a specific time young people
are to be at home under covers and within the control of their parents.
Later King Richard I (1189—1199) decreed to build walls 16 feet high and 3 feet
thick between neighbouring buildings to prevent fire spread. This requirement is similar
to that of modern building codes according to which fire and parapet walls should
prevent fire spread from one building to another. However, the size and thickness of the
walls are now much less than those of King Richard’s days.
Further changes in fire prevention regulations took place after the Great Fire of
London which began on September 2, 1666 and lasted for five days leaving 373 acres of
ashes. After that the London City Council passed the legislation according to which all
buildings should be of brick or stone. These were first efforts organized in England to
prevent fires and protect buildings.
